Welcome

Welcome to Mrs. Brecht's Bookshelf. Here you can read reviews of books that I read personally and books that I enjoy reading to my sons. Read more about our Caldecott journey here and about my decision to read banned/challenged books here. I'll also periodically post fun reading-related activities and ideas. Who knows, I may even start doing some book giveaways if I get enough readers!

1938 Caldecott Medal Winner

Title: Animals of the Bible: a picture book
Author (in this case, text selected by): Helen Dean Fish

Illustrator: Dorothy P. Lathrop
Method of Reading/Extra Activities: Gabriel and I read several stories each night at bedtime.

About the Text: The stories were taken directly from the King James Version of the Bible. Some of the stories were condensed, but they were definitely not paraphrased. This lead to multitudinous muddled mouthfuls from mommy and also some quite humorous chapter titles such as "Balaam's A* s * s" and "Peter's C * o * c * k". (I'm attempting to somewhat censor this post so as not to attract the "wrong type" of blogging traffic.)
About the Illustrations: The illustrations were black and white detailed sketches of animals. You could tell that a lot of thought and creativity went into the drawings.

Our Favorite Part: Looking at the pictures of the animals and trying to name the animals we saw.
Our Least Favorite Part: Sitting still while Mommy was reading. The text-to-picture ratio was pretty tough for a less than 2-year-old.
